The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is the first organisation that we worked with to design internships that truly meet the academic needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
This 23-hectare free-roaming primate sanctuary is part of the award-winning South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance. The sanctuary is home to more than 100 primates who were raised in captivity, whether in zoos, as pets or even for testing in medical laboratories, the entertainment industry etc. New arrivals to The Hidden Forest are rehabilitated following the Eden Syndrome before being released into the large indigenous forest. This stunning forest is also home to a plethora of indigenous wildlife including red duiker, blue duiker, bushbuck, suni, mongoose, vervet monkeys, thick-tailed hushbabies, reptiles, insects and birds.
Whether you have a research project to complete, are looking to volunteer during a placement year or just gain relevant experience during the holidays, this could be the perfect place to volunteer.

Conduct your undergraduate or postgraduate research at Monkeyland-KZN. If you haven't decided on your research topic yet, just let us know and we can suggest some topics for you.
Perfect for students of zoology, animal welfare, animal keeping and similar. Work alongside our animal keeping team. You will prepare and distribute food for the primates, clean feeding platforms and pre-release enclosures, monitor the primates for changes in behaviour or any injuries or health issues.
If you are studying a business-related discipline, we can design an internship for you, based upon your areas of interest and/or specialisation.
The Monkeyland-KZN forest is a photographer's dream but can also be a challenging environment. Hone your skills during an internship, complete your own project in line with your studies or take on a project requested by the sanctuary.
Interns stay in a privately owned house in the town of Shakaskraal in South Africa's Dolphin Coast. The house is 10km from the sanctuary and 10kms from the beaches, bars, restaurants, shopping malls and cinema of Ballito. It is also just 26kms from Durban's international airport (King Shaka International).
The house four volunteer bedrooms, each with twin beds, air conditioning and access to a private shower room. There is also a large dining room (where the evening meal is served), a TV lounge with satellite package and DVD player, kitchen, honesty bar and gardens. There is a selection of books, DVDs, board games and playing cards for interns to make use of during their stay.
The volunteer/internship coordinator lives on-site and, as well as ensuring your placement runs smoothly, can suggest things to do and see in the area and help you to book them.
